
Facebook, which recently changed its name to Meta, first began to develop strategies to fight disinformation campaigns after Russian actors used its service during the 2016 U.S. presidential election to attempt to manipulate the outcome. Since then, the company has engaged in hundreds of takedowns involving shadowy political groups and marketing firms, governments, and profit-motivated groups. Russia, the company said in a report last year, was still the biggest player in foreign disinformation.
